New Year's Day

All about New Year's Day 🎉

New Year's Day is January 1, the first page of a brand new calendar. The countdown to it is the most famous countdown in the world — the last ten seconds of December 31, shouted out loud in living rooms and city squares everywhere.

It is a holiday about fresh starts: resolutions, clean slates, and a day off to recover from staying up late.

How people celebrate New Year's Day

• Counting down to midnight and watching fireworks
• Making New Year's resolutions
• Watching the ball drop in Times Square
• Eating lucky foods like black-eyed peas, grapes, or noodles

Fun facts

• New Zealand and the Pacific islands ring in the new year first.
• The Times Square ball has dropped since 1907.
• 'Auld Lang Syne' is an old Scottish poem set to music.

The countdown above updates live in your own time zone, so the days, hours, minutes, and seconds always match your local clock.
